Buteyko Breathing Retraining

Breathing directly affects 200 Biochemical pathways in our body, the right breathing can improve our overall health. The wrong breathing such as mouth breathing leads to many health conditions. The quickest way to tone down a stress response is with Nose Breathing. Buteyko Breathing retraining shifts our brain from the Sympathetic Nervous System (fight/flight mode) into Parasympathetic Nervous System ( relaxed state) and it calms the whole nervous system. Practised daily it helps with overall health and optimal sleep.

Buteyko Breathing Retraining

The BBC made an investigative documentary on Buteyko in 1998 which is an excellent introduction to Buteyko Breathing.

In this documentary, three patients with extremely severe symptoms who have reached the end of the road in terms of treatment options, are given the opportunity to try out Buteyko Breathing. Remarkable recoveries follow.

9 Benefits of Advanced Buteyko

01. Oxygen Distribution: Promotes oxygen release via haemoglobin, improving oxygen supply to all cells in the body.

02. Balance Blood pH: Balances the pH of the blood, improving the activities of 1000+ enzymes and vitamins.

03. Vasodilation: Improves breathing and lowers blood-pressure by dilating the airways and all blood vessels.

04. Immune System: Raises the antibody-antigen affinity so your antibodies can attack viruses more effectively.

05. Brain cell Synapses: Facilitates higher IQ and emotional balance because brain cells can synapse more effectively.

06. Glucose Uptake: Helps glucose pass through cell membranes more easily so cells can burn more sugar.

07. Nervous System: Lowers the excitability of the nervous system and makes you feel calmer and be more in control.

08. Metabolic Pathways: Improves the functioning of very important metabolic pathways, called gluconeogenesis and lipogenesis.

09. Respiratory System: Lowers the excitability of the respiratory centre: you can do more exercise without feeling out of breath.

Advanced Buteyko is unlike any another breathing technique. While some techniques result in over-breathing (hyperventilation) – such as with pranayama, (an ancient Ayurvedic breathing practice) used to enhance meditation) or the Wim Hof Method, Buteyko specifically avoids hyperventilation. With daily practice Buteyko OXYGENATES the whole body and positively affects 200 biochemical pathways in our body. It also has a cumulative effect when practised daily.

There is a lot of emphasis on Heart- Brain entrainment and research has been done by the Heart Math Institute on how Heart Maths changes the stress response by changing the BREATHING pattern. Buteyko achieves this stress-lowering response as it normalizes breathing and, with an increase in Carbon Dioxide (CO2) in our blood, has a positive effect on the whole central nervous system (CNS).

Why Do We NEED CO2 to increase OXYGENATION?

Very simple. This is based on Bohr’s law, Nobel Laureate in Physics. Christian Bohr proved in 1904 that we need CO2 in our blood to separate the tight bonds between oxygen and haemoglobin.

According to Professor Buteyko’s scientific findings, a totally healthy person has a Control Pause (CP) of 60 seconds or higher. At this level our blood contains 6.5% of CO2.QAZO2) is the chief hormone of the entire body; it is the only one that is produced by every tissue and that probably acts on every organ”

– Yandell Henderson, Ph.D. – Cyclopaedia of Medicine (1940)

If you are not convinced please google the Bohr Effect.

What is Bohr Effect?

A physiological principle discovered by Christian Bohr, a Danish physician and father of the Nobel Laureate physicist Niels Bohr.

The Bohr Effect describes how CO2 determines at what strength oxygen is bound to our blood, or more precisely; the level of CO2 in the blood determines the strength of the molecular bonds between haemoglobin and oxygen. CO2 breaks up these strong bonds between oxygen and haemoglobin.

According to the Bohr Effect, CO2 is not ‘a waste product’ or ‘the enemy of oxygen’. CO2 performs a vital role in our cardiovascular system and works together with the blood to improve oxygen distribution.

In essence, the more CO2 in the blood, the more oxygen is available for our muscles, brain, organs and everywhere else where oxygen is required in the body.

The end result MORE OXYGEN becomes available to all tissues/organs/muscles and the brain as it circulates in the blood stream.

Liver requires oxygen to function optimally and many people these days struggle with high/low blood sugar levels. Low blood sugar levels create a huge biochemical stress in our brain and body. It is one of the reasons people wake up during the night. Low blood sugar levels and hyperventilation are intimately related.  When the Brain is starving for glycogen (blood sugar) it is also starving for oxygen. Over time this exhausts the adrenals, thyroid, liver and ultimately, the whole person.

Advanced Buteyko for Chronic Conditions

Asthmatics can dissolve asthma within 4-8 weeks of commencing daily practise and stop needing inhalers when they continue Advanced Buteyko as a daily breathing practise. For anyone with chronic conditions such as asthma, sleep apnoea & diabetes it is not recommend that you undertake Buteyko on your own.  Serious conditions require the attention and supervision of a certified Advanced Buteyko Instructor to work with you for at least the initial 30 days.
